In July of 1925, Sigel bought a car and as he could not drive, he got Otis Angle (Bertha's boyfriend) to drive for them. They stopped first at his brother Earl's in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Then they went to Portland, Oregon where they visited , brother Emmet and family. On August 13th, on the way to their new home in Eugene, Oregon, they were struck by a train at a detour crossing in Harrisburg, Linn County, Oregon. They were all killed, with the exception of Evelyn, who was 9 and Emmet's son 17 year old Merwin, who was driving that day because Otis had gotten a job in Portland. Coroner's Report Linn County Iowa 3/13 /1925. The report states that the coroner examined the cause and manner of death of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Castle of Po rtland, Or (385 David ST.) and two daughters, Sylvia age 15 and Bertha age 18. He reports that they died in Harrisburg, Oregon when their auto was struck by a S.P. #33 southbound train at a railroad crossing in the northern end of the City of Harrisburg. Accident due to the new detour.
