    AMORY, Mississippi - Mellie Green Brasfield Stevens, 95, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare in Amory after a long illness. She was born Sept. 12, 1909, in Smithville to the late Joseph Arther and Ora Beula Ausborn Brasfield. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, she lived in Smithville and Amory. She married Elmer Troy Stevens in 1927; he died in 1944. She was a homemaker and a master seamstress. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Amory and a member of the Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening.

    Services will be at 2 p.m. today at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory with Bro. Buzz Wilkinson and Bro. Larry Haggard officiating. Burial will be in Pearce Chapel Cemetery in Smithville.

    Survivors include a daughter, Bernice Nell Stevens Shaddix of Amory; a sister, Ruby Laverne Brasfield Hill of Amory; three grandchildren, Steven Shaddix, Suzanne Shaddix and Edward Burton Shaddix; two great-grandchildren, Cory and Aiden.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Floyd Brasfield, Casper Brasfield and Melvin Brasfield; three sisters, Fleta Brasfield Shumpert, Flonnie Brasfield Gilmore and Jewel Brasfield Nash; a granddaughter, Kay Brown; and a grandson, Bobby Joe "Joey" Shaddix.

    Pallbearers will be Steven Keith Shaddix, Edward Burton Shaddix, Dennis Brasfield, Joe Franke, John Dwight Stevens, Bobby Hill and Dickie Hill.

    Visitation will continue until service time today.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Amory Christian Academy, 60035 County Barn Road, Amory MS 38821 or a charity of the donor's choice.

    ESTATE OF JOE A. BRASFIELD, DECEASED~

    LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

    KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS that I, JOE A. BRASFIELD, of Smithville, Monroe County,
    Mississippi, being more than twenty-one years of age and of sound and disposing mind and
    memory, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament; hereby revoking any
    and all other will or wills heretofore by me made.

    ITEM I. I will and direct that all of my Just debts and burial and funeral expenses
    shall be paid by my Executors hereinafter named as soon as may be convenient after my death.

    ITEM II. It is my will and wish and I devise and bequeath all of my property of every kind
    and character and wheresoever located to my children, Fleta Schumpert, Floyd Brasfield,
    Nellie Stevens Jewel Nash, Casper Brasfield and LaVerne Brasfield, share and share alike;
    and should any of my said children not survive me, leaving a child or Children, then In such
    event it is my wish and will that the child or children of the deceased child (the devisee
    herein) shall take the share that the parent would take, if living.
    And I further will and direct that immediately at my death my Executors, hereinafter named,
    shall take possession and control of all of my property and effects; that they shall have
    control of and manage it as in their Judgment they may deem best; but there shall be no sale
    or division of the property until the death of my wife, Mrs. Ora Brasfield, pro-vision for
    whom I am making in the next paragraph hereof. But my Executors may from time to time divide
    any net income or earnings of the property among the devisees herein, but they shall not
    divide any of the corpus or original estate so long as my wife shall live.

    ITEM III. I hereby nominate and appoint my sons, Floyd Brasfield and Casper Brasfield
    Executors of this my will; and I here expressly relieve them of bond and of the duty of
    making reports to the Court. But I expressly enjoin it upon my Executors and all of my
    other children, the devisees herein, that they shall provide a reasonable support and
    maintenance for my wife, Mrs. Ora Brasfield, so long as she may live and remain my widow.
    As to my daughter, Flonnie Gilmore, who is not provided for herein, I request that they
    supply to her from time to time such reasonable support and maintenance as in their
    judgement they may think necessary.

    IN TESTIMONY OF ALL OF WHICH witness my signature, this the 31st day of August, 1937. Joe A. Brasfield
    We hereby certify that the above and foregoing instrument on the day and date thereof
    as in our presence signed by the testator, Joe A. Brasfield, and by him declared to be
    his last will and testament; and we, at his request and in his presence and in the
    presence of each other, hereto subscribe our names as attesting Witnesses.

    Services for Mrs. Ora Bulah Brasfield were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 7 in the chapel of the Pickle Funeral Home with the Rev M.L. Hollis the Rev D.H. Matherly and the Rev. Sidney McLeod officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery with the Pickle Funeral Home in charge. She was 80.

    Mrs. Brasfield died at 1:30 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B.D. Shumpert, in North Amory after an illness of six months.

    Mrs. Brasfield was born and reared near Smithville and was married in 1900 to Joe A. Brasfield, who died in 1944. They resided in the Mt. Zion community where she was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.

    She leaves two sons, Casper Brasfield of Amory and Floyd Brasfield of Smithville; five daughters, Mrs. B.D Shumpert, Mrs. Leslie Gilmore and Mrs. Mellie Stevens of Amory, Mrs. Eron Nash of Hatley and Mrs. Robert H. Hill of Amory; three brothers, Erie, Woodie and Arch Ausborn, all of Hatley; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
