10. | PHILLIPS, John Andrew was born on 18 Apr 1806 in Lincoln, Tennessee, USA (son of PHILIPS, Nicholas and PURDY, Elizabeth); died on 25 Aug 1883 in Hardin, Tennessee, USA; was buried in Crump, Hardin, Tennessee, USA. Notes:
John Andrew Phillips would have been my great-great grandfather, through my grandfather (Jasper Lee Brasfield), his mother (Rebecca Phillips), and her father (John Andrew Phillips).
The location of birth for John Andrew Phillips seems to vary depending on source from Tennessee, to Alabama, to Virginia. He was listed in the 1830 Federal Census (see below) as living in Lincoln County, Tennessee. In the 1900 Federal Census of McNairy County (TN), my grandfather (Jasper Lee Brasfield) has his mother (Rebecca J. Phillips Brasfield) living in the household. Whoever provided the census taker with information, listed Rebecca's father (John Andrew Phillips) as having been born in Tennessee.
John Andrew Phillips' father was supposed to been named Nicholas Phillips. There are only 9 Nicholas Phillips listed in the 1820 Federal Census. There were 2 from Kentucky, 3 from New York, 1 in Ohio, 1 in Connecticut, 1 in Rhode Island, and 1 in Maine. Interestingly enough, none in Virginia when our John Andrew Phillips would have been 14 years old and presumably living with his father. In the 1810 Federal Census when John Andrew Phillips would have been only 4 years old, there were only 2 Nicholas Phillips in the Census - 1 in New York and 1 in Connecticut, and again none in Virginia. A lot of this is obviously hampered by the change in state and territorial boundaries. I have not yet tried to compare those boundaries with the relevant dates. I'm open to any additional information to clarify his birthplace.

Brenda -
Thank you for writing. I have not yet attempted to research Nicholas Phillips. My connection (interest) to him is through his granddaughter, Rebecca Jane Phillips, who married my great grandfather, James Alsey Brasfield. That would make Nicholas my great-great-great grandfather, and I have just not gotten into his roots yet.
What you have found is certainly plausible and/or likely, but I am afraid that I do not have anything to assist you at this time. If anything should develop, I will let you know.

Subject: Phillips research
Michael,
Where did your Nicholas Phillips live when the 1810 census was taken? The following is what data I have gathered. I hope it will explain my question.
I am trying to find the parents of George N. Phillips born abt 1812 in KY. Like your John Andrew Phillips, he also lived in McNairy TN in 1850 and Hardin County in 1860 through 1880. He is on the same page of the 1850 census as your John Andrew. Wife is Elizabeth, oldest child is Nicholas. Due to locations lived in by both, and the common use of given names, I believe there is a good chance that your John Andrew and George N. Phillips were brothers.
Assuming you are correct about the first name of John's father, I did a search for Nicholas in the earlier censuses. I have found a Nicholas Phillips in Mercer Co., KY who I believe is George's father. From all the census data I have on him, he was born about 1785, but I have found no evidence as to where he was born.
Nicholas is in Mercer Co., KY in 1810 and 1820. Then in 1830 Nicholas is in McNairy Co., TN, page 118, along with John Phillips, page 122, and Joseph Phillips on page 119. I'm not sure, but Joseph may be a brother of Nicholas, and not a son. They are both 40-50 years old in 1830. However, Nicholas did have two sons under age 10 in 1810. So one could be your John, but who is the other?
Then in 1840 John ( 30-40) and George (20-30) are still in McNairy county, but Nicholas is not listed. I believe he died before then.
One more thing; in 1850 John Phillips reported that he was born in KY, not TN. If he was born in KY, then it is possible for him to be George's brother and the son of Nicholas of Mercer Co., KY.
So what do you think; have I hit paydirt, or do you think I'm way off base? By the way, this is not my family, but that of a dear friend. Hope to hear from you soon!
Brenda
