  1. 2.  CULVER, Oliver Belden was born on 11 Mar 1791 in Shoreham, Addison, Vermont, USA; died on 11 Dec 1852 in Athens, Menard, Illinois, USA.

    Notes:

Oliver Belden Culver (1791-1852) was an active abolitionist, and a member of the Illinois Anti-Slavery Society. Oliver was also a member of the Springfield Anti-Slavery Society Constitution, and was one of the Springfield residents attending Alton's Elijah Lovejoy's Anti-Slavery Convention on October 26, 1837. A week later, Lovejoy was murdered by an angry mob early November 1837. Oliver was affilliated with both Indian Point Presbyterian and Second (Westminster) Presbyterian Church (and a founding member of the latter).

Oliver & Betsey's son-in-law, Abel Wilder Estabrook (husband of their daughter Laura Stone Culver) ran the Springfield Academy. For three years Abel was the teacher of the Lincoln's eldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln.

Oliver also had a sister named Laura Culver Stone who married Rev. Ashell Stone who was one of the 52 New Englanders (abolitionists) who arrived at Old Sangamo Town by wagon train in 1832. Oliver and his wife must have soon followed. Rev. Ashell and Laura Stone's home still stands on the north side of Illinois Route 97 west of Bradforton Road on the route to Lincoln's New Salem. Lots of interesting history on Rev. Stone and the 52 New Englanders. The Stone Seed Company now operates next door.

Oliver married HOLCOMB, Elizabeth in 1819. Elizabeth was born on 8 Jan 1792 in Granby, Hartford, Connecticut, USA; died on 6 Aug 1872 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
