8. | BRASSFIELD, James was born about 1790 (son of BRASSFIELD, James George and WELTCH, Carol); died on 3 Sep 1839 in Jacksboro, Cambell County, Tenessee. Notes: Mike, Just going through some notes I have from Kieth Buck, concerning the Heron or Herron or Herring family. Actually, this is on James Brassfield, father of George Robert Riley Brassfield, my Ggrandmother's dad. *James Brassfield witnessed deed from James Griffith to John Brassfield of land on North side of Powell's River, Sept. 19, 1811 * 'James Brassfield made an affidavit, Feb. 23, 1816, Claiborne Co. TN. to the effect that he appointed George Petrey to be his attorney to collect from the Paymaster of the United States the wages due him for a "tower of duty" of 3 months and 26 days commencing Jan 17, 1814, as Private in Capt. Davis' company, East Tenn. Militia' * 'James Brassfield, of Claiborne Co., bought of Thomas Lay, of Cambell Co., 50 acres of land on South side of Powells River in Campbell Co., TN. Dennis M.T. Brassfield, John Brassfield, and Thomas Brassfield attested, April 3, 1822 [Deed Bk. G, p. 260, Campbell Co. TN.] * 'Bounty Land Warrant No. 80749 for 160 acres was issued June 4, 1858, to Arman Brassfield, widow of James Brassfield, Pvt., Capt. Davis' Company, Tenn. Militia, War of 1812, By George C. Whiting, Com. Warrant was sold by her to Nicholas Gann, of Pottawatomie Co. Kansas, Jan. 28, 1859. * Pension Records at the National Archives, Washington DC show: Arman Brassfield testified that James Brassfield, her husband, went with Command taken by General Jackson into the Creek Nation where he served during the winter and spring of 1814. * Affidavit of Riley Brassfield that he is a nephew of James Brassfield, deceased husband of Arman Brassfield. Dated March 23, 1873, Livingston Co., MO * Statements made by James Brassfield and Susannah Frisbie, of Livingston Co., MO, who say that they are children of James and Arman, that Sussanah was born while her father was in the service. * ---In 1875, before a Justice of the Peace, Grundy Co. Court, appeared Mary Brassfield, aged 75 years, a resident of Grundy Co., MO who states that she is a sister to Arman Brassfield, Widow of James. She says that she and her sister were married the same day, same place, by the same Justice of the Peace, Silas Williams, Feb. 9, 1811, Claiborne Co., Tenn. and that she married Thomas Brassfield, a brother to James Brassfield. It is interesting to me that Mary was only 11 years old and Arman was only 13 years old when they married. But apparently was not uncommon in those days in Kentucky and Tennessee. Also, Riley Brassfield claims to have been a nephew of James and Arman, and therefore a cousin to my GGgrandfather George Robert Riley Brassfield. But don't know who his parents were. [Riley Brassfield was the grandfather of Charlie Irwin, the subject of the book: "Prairie" Hope this helps.
