2. | HOCKER, Nicholas was born on 7 Jan 1838 in Indiana, USA (son of HOCKER, Joseph Ellison and BRASFIELD, Elzira M.); died on 1 Sep 1907 in Pinal Creek, Arizona. Notes: Thank you for sharing such a nice web site. I am related to the Brasfield family through my Great Grandmother, Laura Hocker Griffen. She is the daughter of Nicholas Hocker (son of Joseph Ellison Hocker and Elizabeth Brasfield) and Elizabeth Ann Jones (Mass, 1845). I am new to genealogy, but the Hocker family in Arizona is fascinating. My previous information indicated that Nicholas was born in Kentucky. That is what he indicated in the 1870 Census in Arizona. However, I have found many inconsistencies in the census files. I am fascinated by this branch of the family. I have many writings from Laura Bell about growing up as a pioneer in Arizona. I was most impressed that her parents would migrate a hundred miles or more to make sure their children received a good education. There are many documented accounts of their moves to find schools for their children. Nicholas apparently was not in good health. Perhaps that was part of his motivation to go to the dry climate in Arizona. My grandmother s account indicate that Nicholas brother, James, also had a farm in Arizona. Even with failing health, the Hockers were hard working, very religious, and successful farmers. They were highly respected pioneers and many of their offspring are still in the cattle business in Arizona. I moved further west to California. Could you provide me with your source for Nicholas birth? Thank you. Judy Armer jarmer@pacbell.net 1/19/2003 ************************************************** I saw your entry for Nicholas Hocker and I believe he may be the same gentleman who lived near Seneca in Nemaha County Kansas in 1864-65. My g-g-grandfather, Rev. James Sayre Griffing, a Methodist Circuit Rider, was stationed in Seneca during that period of time and mentioned Nicholas a few times in his letters to his absent wife. One letter, written, in January 1865 mentions the birth of a child to Nicholas Hocker and his wife, Elizabeth. I see that Nicholas's mother died near Seneca in 1862. If you'd like to check out these letters, you'll find them posted at www.griffingweb.com under the Civil War Years. Notes: Hi Michael, While I have the sampler off the wall, I think I will transcribe the back for you. I am no photographer, but I took some pictures of the sampler. I hope they come out. If they are not legible, I will at least transcribe it, but most of it is practicing making the letters. One the back, Marguerite Wallace Kennedy has written: Sampler - done by Elzira M. Brasfield when she was 11 years olf. Born in Madison County, Kentucky, March 28, 1815 Given to daughter - Mary Elizabeth Hocker - Williams Then to her daughter - Louise Marion Williams - Wallace Then to her daughter - Marguerite Wallace - Kennedy Then to her cousin - Nancy Lowrie - Wright in 1971 (great grandaughter of Mary Elizabeth Hocker - Williams) I tried to get some pictures of the back of the sampler also, I don't know how they will turn out. There is some glass on the front of the sampler, every place I put it, I could see myself reflected in the glass. I hope I will have some pictures that don't show my reflection too. I will mail those pictures as soon as I get them developed. Nancy tewright [tewright@cajun.net] 10/17/2001
