Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, Sept. 5, 1885, page 4:
    Suicided
About two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, J.D. Brassfield was discovered by his family hanging in a young cottonwood tree, about one hundred yards southeast of his house. They cut him down and one of the boys hurriedly notified the neighbors.
The last his family had seen of him was between ten and eleven o'clock in the forenoon, and had supposed he had gone to one of the neighbors.

The deceased had taken a halter and fastened it to the top of the tree about twelve feet from the ground, climbing the tree with his boots on, and then as everything was fixed satisfactory to him, took off his boots and stood them a few feet from the tree selected for his own destruction. He again climbed the tree, adjusted the noose around his neck and swung himself into eternity. The only reason for this rash step is that he was working under a temporary spell of insanity, which seemed to trouble him every fall, yet no one supposed that it would ever cause him to plan or carry out his own destruction.

John Brassfield was a good man, industrious and prosperous. A good neighbor, a loving husband, and a kind father, and to whose family the sympathy of the entire community is extended in this their darkest hour of sorrow.

    Notes for JOHN D. BRASSFIELD:
"J.D. Brassfield, who used to live in Union township, but who has lived in Kansas the last three years, committed suicide at his Kansas home. He was perhaps somewhat insane. He was sent to the insane asylum when a young man, and has been troubled somewhat at times since. We are indebted to W. W. Gentry for this information." Taken from an article written in the Winterset Madisonian newspaper, dated Sept. 17, 1885.

John married MCCLELLAND, Martha A. on 15 Aug 1867 in Patterson, Madison, Iowa, USA. Martha was born on 3 Apr 1846 in Shelbyville, Shelby, Indiana, USA; died on 17 Jul 1917 in Glasco, Cloud, Kansas, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  MCCLELLAND, Martha A. was born on 3 Apr 1846 in Shelbyville, Shelby, Indiana, USA; died on 17 Jul 1917 in Glasco, Cloud, Kansas, USA.

    Mattie A. Brassfield
Mattie A. Brassfield was born at Shellyville, Ind., April 30, 1846. At the age of six years she moved with her parents to Madison Co., Iowa. There she grew to womanhood, and on August 15, 1867 was united in marriage to John D. Brassfield. To this union 6 children were born, four of whom are now living. The family came to Kansas and took a timber claim near Glasco in the spring of 1885 and in the fall of the same year, the husband and father departed this life, leaving all the cares of the young family to be born by the wife and mother.
For more than 32 years her home has been here; and her life among us speaks with greater eloquence than any eulogy which I might be able to pronounce.
For the past eight years she has been a great sufferer, and during the one week of her final illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Grace McLane of Cawker City, she calmly and faithfully awaited the end; and when the call came, she passed peacefully to her rest.
The span of life for her was 71 years, 2 months, and 17 days.
Among the immediate relatives she leaves three brothers, M.T. and T.D. McClellan of Glasco, and Benj. of Orange, Calif. Two sons, G.W. Brassfield of St. Joe, and B.R. Brassfield of Salina. Two daughters, Mrs. E.N. Ott, of Salina, and Mrs. L.A. McLane of Cawker City. Fourteen grandchildren.
At the age of 14 years, she became a member of the Christian Church; and for 57 years had been a faithful follower of the Great King.
Funeral services, conducted by Elder Park, were held at the Christian Church Thursday at 2 p.m., and interment was made in the Glasco Cemetery.

  3. 14.  BROOKS, Erastus Otis was born on 26 Jun 1843 (son of BROOKS, Alvin and FREER, Pheba).

    Notes:

Erastus (E.O.) married Sarah C. White. She was one of two ladies captured by the Indians, he was in the rescue party. I'm not sure if he was assigned to Custer's command, the Kansas Volunteers, or another. After the rescue of Sarah and a Mrs. Morgan I don't know except they wound up getting married approx. six months after the rescue. Norman Charles Brooks (brother to E.O.) their father was Alvin Brooks.there was other bros. and sisters which I didn't name, could get them for you if you desired. The raid, actually there was at least two, the one when they took Sarah captive, occured Oct 13, 1868, rescued March 22,1869 according to an article published in the Kansas City Star. Mrs. Morgans' maiden name was Anna Brewster and her capture was in a separate raid. Does that clarify anything? Hubert

Erastus married WHITE, Sarah Catherine on 1 Dec 1869. Sarah (daughter of WHITE, Benjamin and GOOD, Mary) was born on 10 Dec 1850; died on 11 May 1939. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
