  1. 4.  BRASSFIELD, John Alva Jr. was born on 23 Jun 1924 in Dunlap, Edwards, Missouri, USA (son of BRASSFIELD, John Alva and FISHER, Lillie Alberta); died on 11 Feb 2011 in North Kansas City, Clay, Missouri, USA; was buried on 14 Feb 2011 in Trenton, Edwards, Kansas, USA.

    JA Brassfield, an 86-year-old lifelong Trenton area resident, died at 8:47 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at the North Care Hospice House in North Kansas City. He had recently resided at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today (Monday, Feb. 14, 2011) at Resthaven Mortuary, north of Trenton. Bro. Duane Campbell officiated. Jim Ingraham was the pianist. The Honey Creek Minuteman Group sang “When We All Get to Heaven.” The congregation sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and special music included “God Bless the USA” and “Peace in the Valley.” Pallbearers were Jay Cooksey, Clay Brassfield, Casey Brassfield, Dan Knapp, Philip Grisamore, Kenneth Brown, Avery Cooksey and Carson Cooksey. Honorary pallbearers were Danny Shuler, Bob Holloway, Eric Hoover, Leon Spencer, Lewis Lynch, Jake Diercks, Eldon Cooksey, Gary Speck, Tracy Morrison, Aaron Huffstutter, Brent Wyant, Jerry Roberts, Larry Bunnell and Gary Bunnell. Burial was in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, north of Trenton, following military graveside rites by the Joseph L. Norton VFW Post No. 919 of Trenton. Those participating were Lannie Harkins, Bart Shaw, John Rice, Jeb Walker, Paul Ellis, Bob Haggy, Jerry Trump and Charles Davidson. Mr. Brassfield was born on June 23, 1924, the son of Alva and Lillie Fisher Brassfield north of Dunlap. He attended the rural Herbert School and graduated from Trenton High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was married to Sue Reed on Nov. 25, 1948 at Honey Creek Chapel Church. They began farming east of Trenton, starting a grade A dairy in 1953. In the early 1960’s, Mr. Brassfield started a career with Farm Bureau Insurance, which continued until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Brassfield joined Honey Creek Chapel Christian Church in May 1940 and was an active member his entire life, including serving as board president and elder. He was also a member of Mid-America Dairymen, Joseph L. Norton VFW Post 919 and was active in the school and church activities of his family, including the Pleasant Center 4-H Club. Mr. Brassfield is survived by his wife, Sue Brassfield of Trenton; three children, Jane Ann Cooksey and her husband, Mike of Trenton, Thomas Reed Brassfield and his wife, Marla of Overland Park, KS and Nancy Jean Brown and her husband, Roger of Lilburn, GA; nine grandchildren, Michelle Turitto, Jay Michael Cooksey, Jada Cooksey, Amy Knapp, Clay Brassfield, Casey Brassfield, Abby Knapp, Jennifer Fobart and Julia Webb; five great-grandchildren, Avery and Carson Cooksey, Beckham and Hudson Fobart and Elijah Webb; special friends, Tracy Morrison and Marti Curtis; two sisters, Marjorie Grisamore of Galt and Marianna Eaves of Columbia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dwight Brassfield; a sister, Frances Brown; and an infant brother, Robert. Memorials are suggested to the North 65 Senior Center.
