Sheridan Brassfield, a farmer living three miles west of Eufaula, was shot down at his home by an unknown man.

"WHO SHOT SHERD BRASSFIELD? A family story that has been passed down from generation to generation is real to my family. General Sheridan Brassfield was his name, he was the son of Sedrick Perry Brassfield & Matilda Gee who resided in Fame, McIntosh Co., OK. General was his first name, not a rank, he was never in the service. They called him "Sherd". Sherd was B. July 15 , 1875, not sure where, he married Addie Belle Hinsley ca. 1901, ca. McIntosh Co. Two children came of that marriage, Matilda Melvina Brassfield Kirby B. Apr 12, 1902 & Flossie Lee Brassfield Kimbro B. July 8, 1906. Sherd's death came before my grandmother Flossie Lee was born, as he died Dec. 28, 1905 and is buried in the Fame, McIntosh Co., OK cemetery by his parents. Story has it that they lived in a tent, 3 men road up on horses & yelled out "Sherd", he opened the flap on the tent & one man shot him, he did not die instantly, but weeks or months later from the gunshot. I have two or three versions of what happened that day and why he was shot. In any event, he was hardly 30 yrs of age when he died leaving a wife and 1 daughter and 1 on the way. My Gr. Grandmother Addie Belle (Hinsley) Brassfield then married William H. (Bud) Lawson and they lived the remainder of their lifes in Eufaula, McIntosh Co., OK.

If anyone has heard the story, many years have gone by now, so it won't matter too much I guess "who really shot him", but I would like to hear other versions. Eufaula and the surrounding areas down in McIntosh Co., OK were very close little communities, everyone knew everyone else's business, so I'm sure this story has been passed down to someone through the lines that would share with me. I have a picture of him, he looked like a young boy. Addie Belle was a very strong lady, she raised two wonderful daughters for Sheridan Brassfield and 1 daughter for William H. (Bud) Lawson, Flora Brassfield Brogdon.

Just for histories sake and for the record, if you know this story, please share. I know there are a lot of Brassfield's out there and Kirbys and Lawsons.

I have been to General Sheridan Brassfield's grave, and his parents right next to him and told him I was sorry he never got to know my grandmother the late Flossie Lee Brassfield (Mrs. Acy Kimbro) and his other wonderful daughter the late Matilda Brassfield Kirby.

Because of his love for Addie Belle, the two of them have left wonderful footprints in the sands of time, and lots of little "pitter-pats" to follow of Kirby and Kimbro children, I am proud to be "one of them".
