Dr. Everett C. Eickhoff

Dr. Everett C. Eickhoff, age 87, of Land O'Lakes, Wis., died on Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at the Lillian E. Kerr Nursing Home in Phelps, Wis. He was born on October 11, 1915, to Ruby and Harold Eickhoff of Eland, Wis.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Doe) Eickhoff; a daughter, Shirley (Bill) Handsaker; sons, E. Michael (Helen), Donald P. (Debbie); a sister, Kathryn (John) Reed; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ellen; his oldest daughter, Carole; and two brothers, Harold Jr. and Jack.

Dr. Eickhoff graduated from Antigo High School in 1934; he attended Ripon College, graduating in 1937. He studied medicine at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Louisville, graduating in 1943. He interned at the Naval Hospital in Mare Island, California and completed his residency in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Regular Navy. He was assigned to the Third Marine Division Fleet Marines, as Medical Officer. During World War II, he served on Guam and Iwo Jima. He was assigned to the Ninth Regiment, one of only two physicians to care for over 1,000 combat troops. He was presented with the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement against the enemy while serving as senior surgeon on Iwo Jima. After release from the Navy in 1947, Dr. Eickhoff served as Surgical Assistant to Dr. Russell Buxton at the Elizabeth Buxton Hospital, New Port News, Virginia, a 180-bed facility.

The Land O'Lakes Clinic was build in 1948 and opened in June 1949. For the next 45 years Dr. Eickhoff dedicated himself to serving the Land O'Lakes and Northwoods area. He was affiliated with the Northwoods Hospital and later the Eagle River Memorial Hospital. In 1993, he was inducted into the Fifty Year Club of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, at the society's annual meeting in La Crosse, Wis.

In 1953, he became active in the Phelps State Bank and was instrumental in moving that bank to Land O'Lakes in 1957, now Headwaters State Bank.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 19, at the Ely Memorial Church UCC in Land O'Lakes. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services, at the church, on Friday.

The Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home, Eagle River (715) 479-4777 is serving the family.

A memorial will be established in Everett's name.

Dr. Everett Eickhoff, after serving in World War II, opened a medical clinic in Land 0' Lakes. He delivered babies and did minor surgery at the Land 0' Lakes Clinic, but he also served on staff at the Phelps Hospital. Later, Dr. Eickhoff served the Eagle River Hospital where he was in general practice, obstetrics, and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Eickhoff retired in 1985.

Ellen (daughter of PEARSON, John T and BACKLAND, Alma C) was born on 6 Mar 1918 in Midland, Pennsylvania; died on 9 Mar 1988 in Land O Lakes, Vilas, Wisconsin, United States of America; was buried in Land O' Lakes, Vilas County, Wisconsin, United States of America. Harold married KINNEY, Ruby Ellen about 1914 in Wittenberg, Shawano, Wisconsin, USA. Ruby (daughter of KINNEY, Louis I and HAYNER, Mary) was born on 26 Nov 1896 in Stevens Point, Portage, Wisconsin, USA; died on 25 Jul 1986 in Eagle River, Vilas, Wisconsin, USA; was buried in Antigo, Langlade, Wisconsin, USA. Funeral services for William Eickhoff, who died in this village on Tuesday of last week, were held a First Lutheran church at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon. The Rev. Palmer Wahl officiated and Mrs. L. E. Peterson and Gerhard Johnson sang solos. Interment was in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were Eric Hanson, John Nessheim, Axel Westlund, Val Meckes, Emmanuel Bentson and Olin Hagen. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. 0. B. Hagen, Mrs. Axel Westlund, Mrs. Sanford Iverson and Mrs. E. J. Bentson.
Among those from a distance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Vetting and daughter Arlene, and Mrs. Olga Kieselhorst, Mrs. Viola Schroeder, Mrs. Herbert Vetting, Mrs. Olga Kieselhorst, Donald Larson and Mrs. Anna Jacobson, all of Manitowoc. Miss Dora Eickhoff, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Eickhoff and daughter, Mrs. John Reed, of Antigo; Miss Sophie Holm, of Shawano; Lieut. Jack Eickhoff, of Columbus, Ohio; John Reed, of Great Lakes Naval Training Station; Mrs. Charles Holm, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Loberg, Miss Clare Holm, Miss Hildegard Holm, Mrs. Oscar Holm, Norman Holm, and Mr. and Mrs. Hans Kirkeby, all of lower Morris.
William Frederick Christian Eickhoff was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 5, 1860. While a young man he went to St. Hilaire, Minnesota, where he farmed for a number of years and also worked at other occupations. On November 8, 1885, he was married at St. Hilaire, to Miss Marie Larson, of Manitowoc. In 1908 he and his family moved to this village where he passed away at his home on May 30 after an illness of more than a year.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, one son, Harold, of Antigo, and two daughters, Myrtle (Mrs. Henry Hanson), of this village, and Dora of Chicago; also one sister, Emma, of Callicoon, New York. Two daughters, Mabel and Helen, and three brother and one sister preceded him in death. He also leaves six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
