Howdy once again Michael! I am enclosing this email to update the children of John L. Brasfield and Rhoda Vines. On your site you have 2 sets of the same child and 1 extra that does not belong. First of all, the children named Aner, Lulen and Amanda are really Anna, Lucy and Minnie whom you do list. The Aner, Lulen and Amanda names which are mentioned in the MacAlister book are the names that Rhoda provided to the federal government when she tried to file for her widow's civil war pension after John L. died. Rhoda was illiterate and the names were written down as she pronounced them. According to my kin, Rhoda was a less than ideal mother and that my ggrandfather Henry and his sister Ida raised their younger siblings while Rhoda was off doing who knows what. I have a copy of the pension application and my ggrandfather Henry signs as a witness while Rhoda signed with an X. You also list on the site a child named Ambrose Brasfield. There was no such child. You may have him mixed up with Anna's husband Ambrose Quinn whom you do list correctly. Here is a correct list of all the children and their birthdates and spouses. There is still an ongoing debate as to Henry's birthdate. My dad says he was born in 1869, Henry's tombstone says 1871 and the 1910 census, which I chose to accept as a compromise says 1870. Aunt Ida is also debated as to 1870 or 1871 so since I am male I am saying 1871!

    Henry Wadsworth Brasfield b. 1/1870 m. 1. Belle McCarty 2. Augusta Jetton
    Ida Brasfield b. 1871 m. Marion Ballinger
    Anna Brasfield b. 12/24/1876 m. Ambrose Quinn
    Lena Brasfield b. 2/25/1878 m.Evan Quinn
William Leonard "Lee" Brasfield b. 10/29/1880 m. Minnie Lee Payne
    Lucy Brasfield b. 3/14/1882 m. Hessie Quinn
    Minnie Brasfield b. 10/26/1886 m. William Alexander

Ambrose and Evan Quinn were brothers and Hessie Quinn was their first cousin. I know of at least 7 occasions where Brasfields and Quinns got together and had children, including my grandparents. The birthdates for the children are taken from tombstones but as we have seen they may not be accurate as well. Thank you once again for the time that you put into this and whenever I get free time I will pass along more information. Have a nice day.

    Howdy Michael,
There has been much debate and speculation in my family over which side John L. Brasfield served with during the Civil War. The McAllister book on page 607 lists him with the 1st Alabama Calvary and the 12th Tennessee. Both units were Union outfits. His wife Rhoda made a pension claim # 504437 attesting to his service. I have a copy of that pension claim from the national archives and his name was never found as being a member of any of those units nor do I believe that Rhoda ever got her pension. Given the shady and not too pleaseant reputation of my 2d greatgrandmother it is possible that she made up the story of John serving for the Union just to try to get any pension she could get her hands on. My greatgrandfather Henry W. Brasfield, Peter Copeland and Thomas and Mary Trice all signed as witnesses on her behalf. She claims that John served from 1864 till the end of the war and that he hid out in the woods while on furlough as to not be caught by the rebels. What is strange is that they were married in March 1865 while the war was still going on. I recently found a website to which shows strong evidence that John L served with the Confederates. http://www.geocities.com/coh41/13thBtlnAlParRgrs.html details the history and muster rolls of the 13th Battallion Partisan Rangers. They were a Confederate calvary unit formed in Jasper, Alabama in September 1862. Company B lists a John Brasfield, with one s, along with a few Alexanders, a CC Ballinger, WT Hancock and Daniel Trice. The names listed above are surnames that appear often in my family tree. Company C lists two McCartys as well as two Jettuns who may be Jettons. My greatgrandfather Henry married both a McCarty and a Jetton. I am convinced that John L. Brasfield did in fact serve for the Confederacy at one time. It is possible that he did switch sides later as the war turned in favor of the Union even though I can't verify his service other than what Rhoda claims. I thought that this little bit of history may be of interest to the website under your stories or Military section. The above weblink may also be a helpful tool on your site for other Brasfields interested in Civil War history. Thank you once again for your dedication to our website as always.
