I am a descendant of Henry Lander and Nancy Brasfield of Christian County, KY through their daughter Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander who married Atha Gregory Hudson. Henry Lander was born Feb. 28, 1794 in Clark County, KY, the son of Henry Lander, Sr. and Letitia Strode. He died November 28, 1862 in Washington County, IL. He married Nancy Brasfield December 10, 1818 in Clark County, KY. Nancy was born in 1801 in Kentucky and died Abt. 1831 in Trigg County, KY. Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander was born July 8, 1820 near Winchester, Clark County, KY. She died January 15, 1913 in Humansville, Polk County, MO. She married Atha Gregory Hudson July 11, 1835 in Memphis, TN. Atha Gregory Hudson was born November 25, 1813 in Halifax County, VA, the son of Daniel and Sally Hudson. He died November 27, 1912 in Humansville, Polk County, MO. They were married for over 75 years. Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander was named after her aunt, Elizabeth Shipp Brasfield. I too have often wondered where Shipp came from? My line is: Edward Brasfield/Nancy Ann Emerson (how did you find her surname?) Ginette 10/25/2000 ************************* Mike, Here is a little on the marriage of Atha and Catherine: From "History of the Lander Family of Virginia and Kentucky," David Lander Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander was born near Winchester, Ky., July 8, 1820, and with all that name and the name of Hudson annexed later, she lived 92 years and a half! Her mother died when she was 11 years old. She was a beautiful girl and had many suitors, the most persistent of whom as A. G. Hudson, of Virginia, a saddler's apprentice at Hopkinsville, Ky. There is a bit of romance connected with their marriage. Her cousin, Martha Ann, was about to run away with Austin Benham, because her parents objected to the match. Martha requested Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp to accompany her. Without inquiring who would constitute the party and glad to have a joke on his brother, John S., Henry consented to Catherine's going. Alas for him, the joke was double-barreled. Mr. Hudson went along, unbeknown to Henry, and there was a double marriage at Memphis, Tenn., July 11, 1835. When the party returned, Wiley was the first of the family to hear what had happened, and thus he broke the news to his father, saying, "Pap, Kit's done got married"! Henry was furious. He bellowed around and pawed up the earth like a mad bull, and possibly at the instigation of the stepmother, he disinherited his child. Catherine's mother had previously given her a negro girl, and that was the extent of her dowry. The marriage was a happy one, however, and their diamond wedding anniversary was celebrated at Humansville, Mo. Mr. Hudson lived to be 99 years old and his wife 93. They had nine children. The story isn't quite accurate as in I have found that it wasn't Martha Ann and Austin Benham they went with. I don't know which of her cousins it was? When about fourteen years of age he began learning the harness-maker's trade in Hopkinsville, Ky., and, after becoming thoroughly acquainted with the details of the business, worked in that State for a number of years. In October, 1851, he came to Cedar County, Mo., where he made his home until 1877, when he located in Humansville. During the war he worked in Sedalia, Mo. He was married in Kentucky in 1835 to Miss Catherine Ann Elizabeth Lander, a daughter of Henry Lander, and granddaughter of Maj. Brasfield, of Clark County, Ky. They have two sons and two daughters living: Charles William, a farmer, of Vernon County, Mo., a substantial citizen of the county, and a soldier in the late war. John, the other son; Ophelia Kate, wife of Cicero Warner; and Mollie, wife of E. P. White, a railroad contractor of New Orleans, La.
