- There are three Clarence Whitneys that I know of, all in the same family. The one born in "1904" was Clarence Gilbert Whitney born Nov. 30 1902 and was my father's older brother. His father was Clarence Peter Whitney (my grandfather) born Sept 16, 1879 (not 1884) near Union, Iowa. His father was Charles W. Whitney, born February 23,1856 near Union Iowa, and his father was Clarence Whitney, husband of Elizabeth Hardinger. A family legend is that the elder Clarence drowned in the Mississippi while the family was crossing into Iowa to homestead. Charles W. is listed at age 0 in the 1856 Iowa Census, with a sister Susan, age 1, so if the legend is true, the drowning must have happened in the summer or fall of 1855 while Elizabeth was pregnant with Charles W. I have not been able to find out anything more about the elder Clarence. Elizabeth was born in Fairfield, Ohio, in 1833, but my searches of Ohio records for Clarence have not been successful. whitney6@home.com ---- Original Message ----- From: Michael Brasfield To: Chet/Dee Whitney Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 7:39 PM Subject: Re: whitney Chet/Dee - I appreciate the suggestion to examine the Marvin Knock file. However, the 2 Clarence Whitney individuals that I have in my files don't seem to match. One is estimated to have been born in 1884, and the other in 1904 - neither one seeming to have any connection. Any further information that might tie this one to either one of my two? Thank you for writing.
