- N.M.D. Kemp got a commission from President Andrew Johnson as captain of Company C, 6th Tennessee Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers during the Civil War, and was Sheriff & Tax Collector of Hardin County after the war.

A great deal evidence points to the fact that Nathan changed his name from Camp to Kemp and was a descendant of Thomas Camp Family of VA, NC, SC, GA, etc. J. Kay Kemp Taylor
