- Daniel James Grey April 8, 2010 Daniel James Grey, 81, of Tipperary Hill, Syracuse, died peacefully at Francis House on April 8, 2010, surrounded by his family. Born in New York City to parents, John Grey of County Derry, Ireland and Catherine Campbell of County Tyrone, Ireland, he spent 48 years living in Queens, NY, including Woodside and Douglaston. He was a graduate of Bryant High School, class of 1946 and served in the US Army's 82nd Airborne glider regiment. He graduated from New York University and worked in advertising for many years in Manhattan, for such companies as McCann Erickson, Lever Bros, and Bristol Myers, before relocating to Syracuse, New York to work for Carrier Air Conditioning as a technical writer. He was a church member of St. Charles Borromeo. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club. He gave his time as founder and coach of the St. Anastasia's girls track team and later, with his wife, was a hospital volunteer at St. Joseph's Health Center. He was a lifelong Yankees and Giants fan. He was an avid swimmer at Onondaga Community College, had a love of the ocean and treasured his family summers in Watkins Glen. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially watching his grandchildren become friends on family summer vacations. He authored two books including, Not Forgotten, a book which honors and remembers service members who lost their lives in the Persian Gulf War. Dan was predeceased by two dear brothers, John and Harry; his beloved sister, Kathleen; and four of his nephews. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Grace Audrey (McDermott); his six children, Nancy (Charles) Impelizzieri of Mattydale, NY, Carolyn Grey of Augusta, GA, Alison (Paul) Estes of Cincinnati, Ohio, Patricia (Russell) Johnson of Ashland, VA, Linda (Mark) Swan of Tully, NY and Daniel (Kelly) Grey of Fairfield, CT; 19 grandchildren, and siblings, Theresa, Helen, and Michael. Friends may call on Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Tipperary Hill, on Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a private burial at the Onondaga County Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208.
