- Little Rock businessman James Howard "Bum" Atkins died early Friday afternoon at St. Vincent Infirmary after a brief illness, his brother-in-law, Little Rock attorney Phil Anderson, confirmed to ArkansasBusiness.com. Atkins was 79.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 310 W. 17th St. in Little Rock, with a reception following the service at Morrison Hall. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Reubel Funeral Home.
Atkins sold his self-named insurance agency to independent insurance giant Marsh & McLennan Cos. in late 1985. He "retired" from the insurance business in 1997, according to Anderson, but not from the workforce. "He immediately went to work as managing director of Herrington Inc., a Little Rock investment company," Anderson said. Atkins' widow, Kathleen, is the sister of Anderson's wife, Missy.
