- GRANVILLE, Grundy County, Missouri
Granville, an old town, flourished in the eighteen fifties, very near the present site of Dunlap. It had a general and grocery store, whose principle trade was in whisky, and a blacksmith shop. Here occurred the killing of McAfee and Phipps, about 1859.
In about 1859 there was a double killing at the town of Granville. In a quarrel, George McAfee shot Joseph Phipps. At the time Joseph Phipps war married to Hazel A. Kirk. One of Hazel's brother's (Wiley Clark Kirk) then shot and killed George McAfee. Hazel later married Jesse Huston Brassfield.
George McAfee was a Mason. Only legend remains, but the story goes that he was killed over a dispute concerning racehorses, two men were killed and buried near the creek bank. Only remnants of one stone were found; broken and scattered. It is recorded that George McAfee (November 25, 1821 - June 29, 1859) is commemerated at the site of the McAfee Cemetery in Grundy County, Missouri.
