Her father's family had migrated to Kansas in 1876 and settled in Halstead, Kansas. Her mother's family had been in American much longer and had traveled from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and then to Kansas. While this book tells Mary Ruth's story of her childhood, marriage, and children, it also tells the story of her ancestors. It is the story of Wilhelm "William" Mierau and his children who had lived in South Russian before coming to America in 1876. They settled at Halstead, Kansas. William had two sons, Dietrich and William, and a daughter, Anna. Their families lived in Harvey County, Kansas and married into the Boehm, Bergtholdt, and Janzen families. The Bergtholdt family also came from Europe to Halstead, Kansas about 1877 with a brief stop in Illinois. One daughter married into the Mierau family and lived in Newton, Kansas. Another son lived in California and established a plant nursery and fruit business in Placer, Yuba, and Sutter Counties. Mary Ruth's mother's side of the family included the Sturtz family. The Civil War disrupted the Sturtz family. The father, Adam, as well as two of his sons, served in that war. After the war, Adam went to Stafford County, Kansas and his son, John M., settled in Cowley County, Kansas. ******************************** Brasfield, Mary Ruth, 94, beloved Grandmother, Mother, co-worker and buyer/sales manager for Tropical Designs, Inc., died Friday, October 31, 2003.
