Joyce Ramona Fortner Smith, 86, of Monroe, WA died July 24, 2007 at home.
First child of C. James Fortner and Evelyn May Forster, born July 19, 1921, Joyce graduated from Arlington High School in 1939. She married Leo C. Smith in 1940 and raised five children, living nearly all her life in Snohomish County.
Joyce was a homemaker who loved to spend time with her family, to garden, bake, quilt, knit, read and work puzzles. She was a faithful member of the Monroe Congregational Church women's quilting group, served as church treasurer for many years, and baked memorable pies for the annual church rummage sales. She will be remembered for her quiet ways, her giving nature and sweet smile.
Joyce was preceded in death by Leo, her husband of 60 years; son, Roy E. Smith; and grandson, Philip A. Barker.
She is survived by her children, Karen Smith Rupp, of Gold Bar, WA, Theresa (George Richert), of Kingston, WA, Michael D. (Vicki), of Roswell, NM, and James W. (Gay), of Stanwood, WA; four brothers and four sisters; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many friends and neighbors who had the honor of knowing and loving her. We are comforted knowing that she is eternally sheltered in the arms of God.
A memorial gathering is planned for 11 a.m., August 18, 2007, at the Monroe Congregational Church.
The family requests no flowers. Gifts in Joyce's memory may be made to the Monroe Congregational Church, the UW Medical Center, or Hospice of Snohomish County.
