    Vera E. Ellis - Aug. 9, 1922 - March 17, 2009

    MONTROSE - Vera E. Ellis went to be with her Father and Savior Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at the Montrose Memorial Hospital. Vera was born Aug. 9, 1922 in Topeka, Kan. to Virgil and Elise Ada (Peterson) Brassfield. She spent her childhood in Topeka, and at the age of 9, her family moved to Montrose, Colo. where she received her education and graduated from Montrose High School in 1940. Vera went on to college at the Parks Business College in Denver. She married Leo Wilson Ellis in 1942 in Montrose. Leo preceded her in death in 1984. Vera was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church on Townsend in Montrose. She served as deaconess for the church for many years as well as Protheon Secretary. Vera served as a practical nurse for Anna Fender in Montrose, and taught kindergarden for two years at Northside Elementary School. She enjoyed arts and crafts and was excellent at her embroidery. Vera loved the outdoors, going on picnics, watching wildlife and horseback riding. She enjoyed fishing, the mountains and watching sporting events, especially the Denver Broncos and Colorado Buffaloes. Vera is survived by her son, Jerry Ellis of Montrose; brother, Rex Brassfield of Montrose; one sister, Katherine Parker of Alamosa, Colo; three grandchildren: Gerald Eugene Ellis Jr., Sean Wilson Ellis, Lisa Marie (Ellis) Norte and husband, Ernesto Norte; and two great-grandchildren: Arista Cleolitas Jean Ellis, Gerald Eugene Ellis III. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leroy and Tony Brassfield; and sister, Lucille Dopp.

    A public visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday evening, March 19, from 6 to 7 p.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, March 20, 2009, at 10 a.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Cemetery, east of Montrose. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121.

    Clyde D. 'Tony' Brassfield - MIAMI, Okla. - Former Montrose resident, Clyde D. "Tony" Brassfield, age 68, of Miami, Okla., died early Thursday morning, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Integris Baptist Regency Health Center following an illness. Tony, the son of Virgil and Elsie (Peterson) Brassfield, was born on Sept. 16, 1936, in Montrose, Colo., where he spent his childhood years, graduated from the Montrose County High School and grew to adulthood. He lived in Grand Junction before moving to Miami, Okla., in 1958 from Cortez, Colo. On Oct. 30, 1955, Tony entered into marriage and a lifetime partnership with the love of his life, Virgie Cummings, in Montrose, Colo. Tony and Virgie had the joy and privilege to share nearly 49 years of marriage prior to Tony's death. Tony was a horse trainer and traveled to several tracks. He was also involved in rodeos, grocery stores, for B.F Goodrich in Miami, Okla., as an auctioneer, and as an antique dealer. He was a former member of the Jaycees, Auctioneers Association, the Elks Lodge in Miami, Okla., and the Rubber Workers Union. He was a current member of the Liberty Baptist Church.

    Surviving family members who were honored to share Tony's life include his wife, Virgie Brassfield, of Miami, Okla.; two sons: Brent Brassfield and wife Tammi and Brian Brassfield and wife Dana, all of Miami, Okla.; two grandchildren: Jessica and Graham Brassfield, both of Miami, Okla.; one brother, Rex Brassfield, of Montrose, Colo.; two sisters: Vera Ellis, also of Montrose, Colo.; Kathryn Parker, of Alamosa, Colo.; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Tony was also preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Brassfield; one sister, Lucille Dopp; and a half brother, Maynard Brassfield. The family received friends on Sunday, Oct. 17, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami, Okla. A funeral service in celebration of Tony's life was officiated by Minister Leon Weece, with Rev. Carol Holden assisting, on Monday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Miami, Okla. Interment followed in the G.A.R. Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions, in memory of Tony Brassfield, may be made to the American Cancer Societ or American Diabetes Association, c/o Cooper-Althouse Funeral Homes, 5 B. Street Northwest, Miami, OK 74354. Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home of Miami, Okla., (918) 542-3311.

She graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City, Mo., and worked for Commerce Bank, Jack Henry Clothing, and was secretary of the Saddle Horse division of the American Royal. Barbara is survived by her husband, Frank Fendorf; son, Fred Fendorf, who may be contacted at 9736 Slater Lane, Overland Park, KS 66204. A private memorial was held and was under the direction of D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, Overland Park, Kansas.
