    Notes:

    SERGEANT BLUFF -- Ernest N. "Bud" Brassfield, 85, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at his residence, surrounded by his wife, Rita, and daughters, following a two month bout with cancer.

    Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. The American Legion Post 662 will stand an honor guard at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion George Nelson Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel in Sioux City.

    Bud was born July 26, 1921, in Bronson, Iowa, the youngest of four children born to E.J. and Mary (Steinhofer) Brassfield. He attended school in Luton, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945.

    He married Rita M. O'Meara on Aug. 7, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. He farmed in Bronson and later in Salix. He also worked during the winter months at the air base. In 1967, he became a state employee with the Iowa Air National Guard, but he continued to farm. He retired in 1984 as a state employee.

    He enjoyed taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on tractor rides. He liked cooking, playing cards, socializing and helping his neighbors and friends. He was known for his hospitality, generosity, sense of humor and loyalty. He will be missed and remembered by his family, life long friends, American Legion comrades, coffee buddies and neighbors as a caring and kind man.

    He was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff. He served as the first vice commander for three years. He was instrumental in raising funds for the new legion building and involved in erecting the Veterans Memorial in Sergeant Bluff. He was the first to volunteer for any project or community development. "All gave some, some gave all," he gave all.

    Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rita M. Brassfield of Sergeant Bluff; four daughters, Jeanne and her husband, Jack Basye of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary and her husband, Larry Johnson of Sloan, Iowa, Debbie Miller of Omaha and Lori and her husband, Doug Stone of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; Linda Nordstrom (adopted daughter) of Sloan; and a sister, Vi Hough of Grants Pass, Ore.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everett "Rusty" Brassfield; and a sister, Ileen Brassfield.

    Pallbearers will be Adam Johnson, Matt Johnson, Denny, Jerry, Jeff and Bob Brouillette. Honorary pallbearers will be Errol "Skinny" Brouillette, Don Bauerly, John Hollenbeck, Roger D. Huot, Kermit Lee, Roger Stolen, Rich LaCroix and Jack Van Cleave.

    The family wishes to thank you for the many cards, phone calls, visits, food and help given during Bud's illness. We appreciated your kindness. Thanks to Hospice and a special thanks to Ruth for her consideration and compassion
