Sedrick P. Brassfield, who I hereby certify is a respectable and credible person, and who, being duly sworn, delcares in relation to the aforesaid claim as follows:

"I was conscripted by the Confederates on Cave Creek in Newton County Arkansas and enrolled as a member of Captain Buck Dawson's company in Brooks Regiment at Mount Comfrey in ----- county of same state. I cannot remember the date, but think it must have been some time in the fall of 1862, as, know I only remained with them 30 days when I deserted and left them, remaining out of my military service at the____for some little while when I joined the Federal Army in February 1863. I cannot write myself, but this Affidavit was all written in my presence from oral statements made by me on this the 16th day of September, 1895, at Eufaula in the State of Indian Territory to G. W. Grayson by whom the statement was written down and I was not aided or prompted by any written or printed statement or ______ prepared or dictated by any other person and not attached hereto as an exhibit. He further declares that his post office address is Eufaula, Creek Nation Indian Territory.

Statements by A. B. Brassfield who says he has known Sedrick 40 years and that he was never served as a volunteer in the days in said Army. This was when Sedrick was trying to get his pension.

This is the story of Aaron Franklin Brassfield as I know it. His birth
& death dates from his Civil War Pension (Union) Application show he was
born 13 April 1848 at Mt. Judea, Newton County, Arkansas. His father was
Abner Brassfield born 1808 in Tennessee. His mother was Lucinda
(Cindarella?) Gee born 1812 in Tennessee. They married: 17 April 1828
in Chariton County, Missouri per Early Missouri Marriages by Susan Ormesher.

He first married Elizie Jane Standridge ca 1871 in unknown place. Her
parents were Alex Standridge (son of Martin Standridge and Catherine Rose
Meeks). Elizie Jane's mother was Eliza Ann (unknown maiden name). Elizie
Jane Standridge Brassfield died 1884 and is buried in Richland Cemetery,
Newton County, Arkansas (per Cemetery Book). Their children were:

(1) Sally Brassfield born 1873, probably Searcy Co. AR. She married John
Kelse Hallum in 1892 in Newton County. John Kelse was son of Clinton Monroe
Hallum and Salina Caroline Tennison. She died 1933 with burial in Haskell,

There were probably more Brassfield children. Aaron moved around
alot as I could not seem to locate him with his daughters listed
on any census. Aaron claimed he joined the Second Ark. Infantry
(Union) during Civil War and enlisted Nov. 1864 at Fayetteville,
Ark. and discharged May 1865 at Waldron, Arkansas. His claim was
rejected as the War Department could not find a record of him.

Aaron Franklin Brassfield married secondly to Mary A Cook, born
June 1864. Married 20 Nov 1888, Boone County, Arkansas. He died
27 Feb 1933 in Johnson County, Arkansas and is buried in Richland
Cemetery, Newton County, Arkansas (per Cemetery Book).

In 1929 Aaron Franklin Brassfield was living in Lamar, Johnson
County, Ark. He claims since his discharge from the Service he
lived at Mt.Judea and Chancel, Ark. He did not file for a Civil
War Pension until 1929 and he stated that his wife Mary Ann
Brassfield was living (Mary Ann Cook Brassfield). No indication
of where his second wife died or is buried.

On "Declaration of Pension" one question states: That a member of
his family served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard
of the United States between April 6, 1917 and July 2, 1921, or
at any time during said period (if any members of claimant's
family were in the military or naval services during the period
mentioned, state the full name under which each member served,
etc.) and he names James Brassfield. It is not known if James
Brassfield was a son or nephew. Aaron's brother and sons lived
in Searcy Co. Ark. Most folks believe that his name was Earn
Brassfield and he married Mary Jane Standridge and that Earn's
father was Thomas Brassfield. Martha Jane's father was General
Alec Standridge.

This has been handed down for ages.
I did not find this to be the case.

RILEY BRASSFIELD

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 23, Post-office, Chillicothe).

The old settlers of Jackson township are no more worthily represented in the present work than by the subject of this sketch, who came here at a time when Indians were numerous and game of all kind abounded; his nearest market for supplies was at Lexington, and he has indeed lived to see this wilderness "bud and blossom like the rose." Mr. Brassfield has always been a farmer, the calling to which be was reared, and one that has offered him much profit. His birth occurred in Claiborne county, Tenn., February 12, 1814, his parents being James and Mary Brassfield, also of Tennessee nativity, both now deceased, the mother having died after her removal to Missouri. Seven children were in their family: Minter, Riley, Ansel, Elizabeth, Permelia, Charles and Aaron. Riley Brassfield, the subject of this sketch, first came to this State in 1833, taking up his location in Livingston county, but in 1837 he returned as far South as Kentucky, and the same year married Miss Rachel Trammel, daughter of Peter and Mary Trammel, also originally from Tennessee, both then of Kentucky. Subsequently Mr. Brassfield returned to this county and township and located on his present homestead, which embraces 300 acres of fine land, well improved and adorned with a commodious dwelling. Mr. Brassfield's marriage above referred to was consummated September 17, 1837, his wife being one of 11 children, whose names were Dennis, William, Nancy, Elizabeth, Milly Thomas, Mary, Rachel, Sallie, Archibald and Margret. Ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Brassfield grew up to mature years: Laura J., born June 13, 1838, wife of F. M. Hughes; Mahala A., born September 10, 1839, now Mrs. J. B. Pond; Emily C., born September 23, 1841, married H. H. Turner, and is now deceased; G. M., born August 6, 1843; Mary M., born September 28, 1845, now Mrs. Joseph Irwin; Martha A., born November 23, 1847, wife of A. J. Bone; Zerilda E., born December, 1849, now Mrs. Richard Curtis; J. N., born June 25, 1852; Letitia, born July 14, 1855, married H. H. Purnes, and Rachel J., born April 12, 1862, is Mrs. George Ranbie. Mr. Brasfield and wife have been members of the Baptist Church for 50 years, and have always taken warm and devoted interest in the progress of their religion. They are ever ready to lend a helping hand, and in many instances their liberality has been shown. This portion of the county has been greatly aided by their influence and help.

I am a descendant of Ansel Adams through his son John Lindsay Brassfield's son Winfred Russell Brassfield DOB circa 1901 DOD 4/14/1931 in a railroad catastrophe in Flatrock KY. The only Theodore Brassfield I show in my research was the son of Levi Gilmore Brassfield & Rosan Workman Levi was the son of John Brassfield & Elizabeth Pinkey. This John Brassfield's father was John Joseph Brassfield who was married to an unknown female. John Joseph was born circa 1757 aand was the son of Joseph Leonard Brassfield from Dorset England. Joseph Leonard was said to be one of the Lord Baltimore settlers in the territory of Virginia. Now my father was also a John Lindsay Brassfield born 4/20/1926 to Winfred Russell Brassfield & Fannie Coffey. He had a sister who was born in 1931 and died within the 1st month. Her name was Maud. My father never mentioned her because he was under 5 yrs old and it was the same year his father was tragically killed.

The family of which the subject of this sketch is a representative is one well known to the people of Livingston county, for one or more of its members have been identified with its interests in different capacities since an early period in its history. James S. and Nancy E. Pepper, nee Nave, were the parents of George P., the father being a Virginian by birth and the mother a native of this State. James Pepper died in this county September 27, 1875, but his widow still survives and finds a welcome home with her son, George. Eleven children were born to them, but only five of these are now living: James S., Maud S. and Katie C., at home, and Joseph D., who was married to Miss Annie Immick, daughter of John E. Immick, of Mooresville; he is now located at Sherman, Kan. George P. Pepper was born in Livingston county, January 4, 1852, mid in growing up passed his time in the vicinity of Spring Hill, Jackson township. His career, though perhaps not as long as many others, has been one of thrilling interest. During the war especially he was an active participant in numerous occurrences, though an unwilling one, and was placed in many dangerous places. After the battle of Wilson Creek about 1861, he was hung by one

who thought by this means to induce George to disclose the whereabouts of a friend, William Frith; though only 10 years old he refused to give the desired information and was strung up a second time, with like results. He is familiar with the killing of Dow Kirk and David Curtis by Thos. Jennings mentioned elsewhere and it was he who found the body of William Avery, murdered by Samuel Husher, the particulars of which are well known to him, and he was present at the hanging of Husher. Mr. Pepper after receiving a good education at the Chillicothe High School became located in the mercantile business at Lock Springs, Daviess county, remaining there until the destruction of his establishment by fire November 17, 1884. Another store house which be built at the same place was destroyed by a cyclone: He is now carrying on a mercantile business at a place in Kansas. Mr. Pepper's wife was formerly Miss Emma T. Peery, daughter of James W. Peery, the brother of Capt. Fielding Peery, of Daviess county; her cousin, Stephen Peery, is a prominent attorney of Trenton. Mr. P. and wife have had five children, all of whom are living. He has an enviable reputation throughout the county, and is a genial, whole-souled man whose word is as good as his bond.

who has been closely identified with the development and improvement of eastern Oregon for more than a half century, devoted his attention to the pursuits of farming and sheep-raising throughout his active business career with great success and is now living practically retired at Baker. He owns six hundred and forty acres of improved land in Gilliam county and a tract of one hundred and sixty acres about six miles from Durkee. His birth occurred in Randolph county, Missouri, on the 3d of April, 1831, his parents being Dennis M. T. and Clarica (Williams) Brasfield, who were born in Tennessee and came of German and Welsh ancestors. Dennis M. T. Brasfield followed the pursuits of farming and stock raising throughout his active business career. Mr. Brasfield of this review has one surviving sister who is eighty-six years of age and she makes her home in California.

Thomas A. Brasfield acquired a district-school education and remained with his parents in Missouri until nineteen years of age. In the spring of 1850 he traveled overland across the plains, spending about one month in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then journeying on to Eldorado county, California, where he arrived on the 14th of October, 1850. He took up his abode at what was then commonly known as Kelsey's dry diggings, and engaged in placer mining during the following winter. In the spring he made his way to Sacramento, California, and there spent seven months. In the spring of 1852 he began farming and gardening, following those pursuits with excellent success. On the 3d of March, 1853, he began his homeward journey, returning to Missouri by water via the Nicaragua route and the Mississippi river. On his trip to California and back he had been accompanied by his brother Alexander. His brother John became ill with typhoid fever the day following his return and died nineteen days later.

His mother also fell victim to that dread disease. In the spring of 1861 he again crossed the plains and, settling in Oregon, located on the present site of Echo, which was known in earlier days as old Fort Henrietta. There he engaged in farming and stock-raising. The winter of 1861-62 was a very severe one and from sixty-five to seventy-five per cent of the cattle perished during its course. Mr. Brasfield also conducted a roadhouse or station for the accommodation of the traveling public at what was called The Crossing, en route from Echo to Walla Walla. He took up his abode there in July, 1867, but a year later removed to Scio, Linn county, where he remained for five years. On the expiration of that period he went to Weston and was there engaged in sheep-raising for eighteen years. During the following fourteen years he made his home in Gilliam county, devoting his time and energies to the sheep business with excellent results. In the spring of 1900 he came to Baker county, where he has since been engaged in farming and sheep raising to some extent, though now living practically retired at Baker. During his forty years' experience as a sheep raiser be has enjoyed gratifying success and has found it most profitable to run about fifteen hundred head of ewes in one band, often having as many as seven thousand head of sheep at one time, while at present he runs about six thousand head. He has learned that a good sheep for mutton of coarse grade is the most profitable and has raised all kinds of coarse-grade sheep, making a specialty of Southdown, Shropshire and Lincoln. These grades of sheep are all excellent for mutton and also good wool producers. Mr. Brasfield has found the fine-wool sheep more delicate and more difficult to raise than mutton sheep. It is his conviction that when a sheep's mouth begins to break the animal should be disposed of, as it can no longer be kept with profit. He has always endeavored to winter his sheep with about three months' feed, preferably good alfalfa, for which he pays from five to six dollars a ton in the stack. He has generally purchased enough hay to supply the need of a long winter and has thus always had plenty of feed even when the cold season was unusually lengthy. He owns six hundred and forty acres of wheat land in Gilliam county and also has a tract of one hundred and sixty acres of good farming land about six miles from Durkee, in Baker county. Mr. Brasfield likewise owns his residence in Baker and has practically retired from active work, spending the evening of life in well earned rest, in the congenial companionship of his wife and younger grandchildren. His sons also reside in the same locality.

On the 16th of March, 1860, Mr. Brasfield was united in marriage to Miss Matilda C. Williams, her father being Aaron Williams of Schuyler county, Missouri, who was engaged in the hotel business at Kirksville, that state. Their wedding was celebrated in Schuyler county, Missouri, and seven children were born unto them. John Silas, who is now fifty-seven years of age, married Miss Sivila Hale, of Rye Valley, Oregon, by whom he has three children. Anna Isabel, fifty-four years of age, has been twice married, her first husband being Albert O'Hara. Following his demise she gave her hand in marriage to A. M. Tegarden, of Spokane, Washington. James McClellan, who is now fifty-one years old, is engaged in the sheep business in Baker county, Oregon. Aaron Brasfield and his wife are both deceased. Their three children have been reared by our subject and his wife, Mary, now forty-six years of age, is the wife of William A. Baker and resides in Baker, Oregon. William, who is living in Eugene at the age of forty-four years, married Miss Gussie Drake. George W., forty-one years of age, wedded Miss Frankie A. Puffer, who passed away leaving two small children who are also being reared by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brasfield. The three children of Aaron Brasfield, deceased, are as follows: Robert A., born in January, 1893, who attended school in Baker for about five years and is now in Idaho; Raymond, who was born in February, 1894, attended school for about six years and is now a resident of Idaho; and Edith M., who was born on the 23d of October, 1898, and is still attending school. The children of George W. Brasfield are as follows: George Wilbur, who was born on the 31st of March, 1905, and has attended school for one term; and Raymond Langdon, whose birth occurred on the 26th of March, 1907.

Thomas A. Brasfield gives his political allegiance to the socialist party. He served as sheriff of Wasco county, Oregon, for one term, during the years 1863 and 1864, at which time that county embraced all of eastern Oregon. Since 1856, or for a period of fifty-six years, he has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and has exemplified its teachings in his daily life. He has now passed the eighty-first milestone on life's journey and may well look back with satisfaction upon an active, useful and honorable career.

These are children of Thomas L. Brassfield, b. April 1831 KY, d. Oct. 1902 Adair Co., MO. Thomas was son of William Trammel Brassfield and Nancy Lay, so William Jr. was actually the grandson of William, not son.
Thomas' children by first wife, Maria Johnson, were Mary, Nancy, Rebecca, Reason (Reese), William, Harriett, Isophena; children by second wife, Eliza Howard, were George A. Ell Trammel, Pheba M. Alex, Kate, Albert, Gertie, Solomon (twin), and David (twin). The children were all born in Adair Co., MO.

Mary Francis BRASSFIELD b.15 Aug. 1852 in Kirksville, MO was my ggggrandmother. She M. Zara C. POTTER 1866 in MO. They came to OR ca.1887. I have found that she had a twin sister, Nancy Elizabeth who settled in NE and m. Asa Aldrich. Other siblings include: Wm.Jr.,Reese ,Rebecca, & Harriet. Obviously, their father was Wm. Sr. I do have a name for their mother or any other info as I have not had a chance to do much work on this line as of yet. I believe I found the names mentioned above in an obit for Nancy.
