    Notes:

Without Josh, mailboxes in Firth will be a little bit emptier. Josh Brazier was famous for using his Hallmark computer software and address book with some 250 entries to whip out greeting cards to friends, family members, doctors and parishioners at the Firth Reform Church, where he worshipped every Sunday. The 33-year-old cranked out an average of 150 cards a month for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings -- anything a person could celebrate, and Josh was on it. "He just knew everybody. He missed no one,” said his mother-in-law, Mary Brasfield, who identified herself as his “special mother” when she wrote his obituary. Brazier died Sunday morning from an apparent suicide after throwing himself off a bridge at South 82nd Street and Firth Road. A nurse driving on her way to work noticed his empty wheelchair just before 6 a.m. and stopped. She found his body 35-40 feet below, said Capt. Ben Houchin with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. It was the end of a life that was interrupted five years before. In April 2007, Brazier was driving down 40th Street in Lincoln with his wife, Christie, and their 19-month old son, Joshua Brazier, on the way to Fort Gordon in Georgia, where then-Army Staff Sgt. Brazier was to get special training as a warrant officer. As they crossed Yankee Hill Road, a FedEx truck plowed into their Ford F150. Brazier and his wife suffered traumatic brain injuries. Josh Brazier couldn’t talk for nearly six months. He stayed at a rehab facility for more than a year. After that, he had to use a wheelchair. Brasfield said there were no clues hinting at suicide. In fact, they went to Beatrice on Friday night to cheer on his son at a baseball game. On Saturday, Brazier went with Brasfield’s significant other to score a summer deal on a fall coat, and then everyone partied at a family member’s 50th wedding anniversary. “We had a wonderful evening,” Brasfield said. “All the family was there, and he was laughing and telling jokes and visiting with everybody.
“I hurt as bad if he was my son. I’m so devastated.” It’s not just her, his special mother explained. When it came to Josh, there were no strangers. “We’ll miss him. The town of Firth will miss him. Everyone who crossed his paths will miss him so much.”
